🖥️ From Humble Beginnings: The Turing Machine

Have you ever wondered where it all started? Before the device on which you’re reading ever came to be, where did the proverbial computer crawl out of the sea and start walking? Well. There once was a man of incredible intellect who went by the name of Alan Turing.

Before the digital marvels we now enjoy, Alan Turing laid the groundwork for computing in the 1930s, introducing us to The Turing Machine. A machine that conceptually, formed the building blocks for modern computing today, yet was never actually a real machine that existed.

So, what exactly is this Turing Machine?

Imagine an endless strip of tape divided into squares. Each square can either be blank or show a symbol. The machine, moving along this tape, can perform these actions based on the symbol it reads:

Write a new symbol or keep the existing one.

Move left or right.

Change its internal state.

For any given symbol and state combination, the machine has predefined instructions, like:

For a "A" symbol, move left, replace it with "B", and change to state 2.

This might sound simple, but by following such rules, the Turing Machine can perform a wide array of computations, laying the foundation for all modern computers.
